PEGH

Kirsten Ploehn, Julia Marie Englert, Manuel Gies and Tino Holzmann live and work in Hamburg, Germany, in the field of urban design, activism, community engagement and music. During their 4-week residency at FILTER Detroit they explore the Campau/Banglatown and Hamtramck neighborhood seeking out sounds and pursue the question of what meaning these finds have in relation to property structures in the city.

»in between« - Soundwalk at FILTER Detroit
How do we hear our everyday surroundings and what do the sounds reveal about our neighborhood? What do we learn from the hum and roar of cars and roads, the rattle of lawnmowers, people talking and laughing, the clatter of machines and ventilation systems, the ring and clack of bicycles, the clatter of dishes, a booming bass or music from speakers, or the absence of sound?
We go through life every day listening to music or podcasts on headphones, but how intensely do we pay attention to the sounds and rhythms in our daily lives?
During our four-week residency at FILTER Detroit, we will explore the meaning of sound in relation to property structures in the city. As part of the Hamtrmack Neighborhood Arts Festival, we offer a soundwalk. During our soundwalk through the neighborhood, we dedicate ourselves together to the sounds and tones of our environment. Without technology, only through conscious listening, we can experience our everyday world in a new way. Whether musically, exploratory or as a sensual experience - the world of sounds is boundless and fluid.

Alice V. Schneider

Hailing from Hamtramck, MI, Alice V. Schneider's art delves into the realm of animals and skulls, conjuring a world where life's pulse meets the shadows of mortality. With a gothic undertone, her prints and paintings reveal the beauty within these enigmatic subjects.
Skulls, symbols of both darkness and contemplation, find their way into her art. In their hollow eyes, she explores the fragility of life, each stroke a reminder of its fleeting nature. The play of light and dark serves as a visual hymn to the delicate balance between existence and the unknown.
Schneider's art thrives on the tension between the living and the lifeless, the vibrant and the shadowed. It beckons those with a penchant for the mysterious to explore the stories hidden within the layers of ink and texture.

Join Alice V. Schneider and musical guest for an enchanting afternoon of artistry and music as we open our studio doors during the Hamtramck Neighborhood Arts Festival. Immerse yourself in a world of creativity, camaraderie, and captivating melodies.

Dive into boundless creativity at Public Pool: an artist-run community space igniting collaboration, diversity, and innovation. 🎨🌟 #PublicPoolArt

CERAMICS LIQUIDATION is an absurdist survey, inviting Detroit area ceramicists to collectively let down our guard and commune over things that we might typically shy away from putting into the world; to offer up our oddballs, the unexpected happenings and peculiar things that expose our fallibility and vulnerabilities, the idiosyncrasies that social media’s algorithms discourage, the things that don’t easily meet capitalistic expectations about how art should become commodity, and have some character that’s kept them from the trash, and so they linger in boxes, on the backs of shelves and in the dirty corners of our studios and homes.

Cut and Paste: Artwork by Amy Feigley-Lee and John Corbin

12:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Open Gallery

Inside

Hatch Art formed in 2006, and in 2008 purchased Hamtramck's old police station and has transformed it in to a grassroots art center. It features an art gallery, a former jail cell for installation art, a darkroom, and 11 artist studios. This is a place for artists to make and show work.

"There’s nothing as grand as unlocking the secret of human life. Like Dr. Frankenstein assembling his creature from parts of many people, we cut and paste pieces of those we encounter to form the person that we are. May it not end up as a monster, but an unexpected manifestation of ecstasy.

Artists Amy Feigley-Lee and John Corbin form this two-person show. Amy finely slices wallpaper patterns to layer and weaves them into new creations that create the illusion of a complex space. For her, it is a way to connect her past to her future. John created 13 new paintings that blend other artworks plus body parts and painting techniques to unlock secrets."
